General Products

What applications are your products made for?

Our products are made predominantly for Poser and DAZ Studio. DAZ Studio has the ability to export to FBX format which can be imported to most top 3d applications. Some of our products are DAZ Studio only products simply because Poser doesn't have support for all the functionality built into these figures. We also have some of our products available in iClone format. These products are converted to iClone by Reallusion and we cannot offer any direct support for this format. Please contact Reallusion for an information on this format.

Where can I get Mimic lip sync files for your products?

We have created custom Mimic lip sync files (.dmc) for most of our older products. These files are all available at the following link: Mimic Config Files Please note: DAZ no longer supports MacOS with their Mimic application, so we aren't able to to create Mimic configuration files for our more recent content.

Why are some of your products not Poser compatible?

Although the Poser application has been around for a long time, there are certain industry standard feature that are still not supported by it. Some of these feature include:

  • Geometry Sub-division
  • Non-linear Scaling
  • Dynamic joint positioning
For this reason, products that use these features are unfortunately very limited in Poser. While we could opt to create these products without these features, cartoon figures rely on the ability to change body part sized and dynamically change the rigging. At 3D Universe, we are always pushing to add more features to our products that make the user experience even greater. For this reason, we no longer support the Poser application due to it's limitations.

How do I use your products?

Our products are created to work in Poser (made by Smith Micro) and DAZ Studio (made by DAZ 3D). These programs are 3D CGI rendering and animation software optimized for models that depict human/animal figures and sets or props in three-dimensional form. They are mostly used to pose and animate the figures in a similar way as a mannequin. Both of these programs allow users to manipulate "ready to use" models and figures. They are aimed at users who are interested in posing human and non-human figures for illustrations and animation, but who do not wish to incur the expense of, or who may be daunted by higher-end 3D and CAD software. Both programs have a simple user interface allowing the user to add and manipulate models within the scene, add and manipulate morphs (body-shape changes), adjust the textures applied to models, add and adjust lighting and to fine-tune the render process. Our products come either in a zipped folder format that needs to be extracted to a application-specific location on your computer, or as an installer which will put the files in the correct locations on your computer automatically. Note: Some of our products are now available in iClone format too, but are not directly supported by 3D Universe as they are converted by Reallusion. For more information on using our products - see our Using Our Products page.

What are the Toon Generations?

The Toon Generations are a family of characters based on a morph-able toon human figure. The base has the ability to age from baby to elderly, and morph from male to female. With this figure, it is very easy to create whole families that work well together due to their similar look. With the available add-on packs, the creative possibilities are endless. We also have a developer pack available that allows you to create your own clothing and add-ons for the figure. The developer pack comes with a licence that allows you to redistribute and sell content created using it.

The Toon Generations 2 set of products is now also available which uses DAZ 3D's "Genesis 3" Male and Female figures as a base.

If I feature 3D universe products in my book illustrations, do I need to credit you?

Although it would be wonderful if you did credit us, you are not required to. Book illustrations fall under our standard usage license, and don't require any additional obligations from the client.

Do you accept product/freebie requests?

You are more than welcome to suggest items that you would like to see. There is, however, no guarantee that we will create the product. Each product we create is carefully considered to ensure that it will either add to our existing product set.

I need support for using your products in Carrara/some other software.

Our products are made specifically for the software packages listed on the store page. Although most products that work in DAZ Studio do also work in Carrara, this is a feature that DAZ created to work with their software. We do not offer support for it. Using the FBX export from DAZ Studio enabled use of our products in a wide range of applications that support FBX import. We cannot offer support for all these programs either. For support on applications other than the applications listed on the product page, please refer to DAZ forums or the application's support site.

Can I redistribute your free downloads?

No, you cannot redistribute our free/commercial product in any form*. This includes:

  • Giving a copy to a friend
  • Sharing the product through file sharing websites
  • Making the product available for other to download through file torrent applications
  • Converting the 3d format and giving away/selling the product on sites like Second Life, Turbosquid, etc
Note: The only way you can redistribute the 3D products is by purchasing a Game Development License which allows you to include the products in games.

Game Developer

What is the Game Developer License?

With a game developer license, customers can license our content for use in 3D games. Normally our content is only available for 2D use in games (backdrops, sprites, videos, etc.). Any of our custom content* is available for licencing in games at slightly higher prices than the conventional store prices. Customers will need to do extra work in order to make them game ready. This may include decimation, triangulation, culling, texture work, and rigging. DAZ 3D has a set of tools to automate most of this process, and make the process easier. Content sold under a developer license is still under our original End User License Agreement, or EULA. A new EULA has been written that applies to all content sold in the Developer Store, and this new Real Time License lays out your rights and responsibilities for all game content you ship with your games and aplications. Developer licenses are available as Single-use and Multiple-use. If you are planning to use the model or content in only one project or game you can purchase the Single-use license. If you are planning to use the model in two or more projects purchase the Multiple-use license. Prices can be estimated as follows: Single-use Game Developer License = Standard Product Price (excluding sale price) x 2.75 Multi-use Game Developer License = Standard Product Price (excluding sale price) x 5 *Content that is made as add-ons for other merchant's content is not included. For any enquiries regarding use of our content in game development, please feel free to contact us.

When would I require a Game Developer License?

You would require a Game Developer License if you wish to include 3D content from one of our products in your game. This specifically refers to the 3D geometry or mesh. Any 2D content, like backdrops, image sprites and video sequences are covered under our standard license and don't require a developer license.

Doesn't the 3D Universe Terms of Use prohibit the use of 3D Universe models in games?

3D Universe has introduced special licensing that is available for all 3D Universe custom content which includes distribution rights within projects like games and simulations.

I am using Prerendered 2D renders or "sprites" in my game - do I need a Game Developer Licence?

All of the content available at the 3D Universe Store is covered by the standard Terms of Use which allows 2D renders including sprites as well as rendered animations or movies. Therefore you do not need a Developer license for 2D sprites or videos.

If I have already purchased 3D Universe models under the standard license can I upgrade the license to a developer license?

No. You would need to purchase a new developer license.

Which developer license should I buy?

Developer licenses are available as Single-use and Multiple-use. If you are planning to use the model or content in only one project or game you can purchase the Single-use license. If you are planning to use the model in two or more projects purchase the Multiple-use license.

Can I upgrade my single-use license to a multiple-use license?

Yes. Please contact us regarding your license upgrade requirement.

Can I sell a game that uses your content?

Yes, as long as you have the correct game developer license for all 3D Universe content included in the game.

Do I have to pay royalties to use 3D Universe models in my games?

No. As long as you have purchased a Game Developer License for all 3D content included in your game, the Developer License Terms of Use grant a royalty-free license.

If my game that uses your products is free, do I still need a developer license?

Yes. You still need a Developer License for any 3D content or assets that will be included in the game. The standard Terms of Use do NOT grant those rights.

Are 3D Universe models not too high in polygons to be used in games?

Several tools are available to help reduce high polygon models. Available separately or in the Game Developer Kit, Decimator for DAZ Studio allows users to reduce the number of polygons in any given model or combination of models.

Aren't 3D Universe textures too big and high resolution to be used in games?

Some models contain too many textures or textures that are too large to be used efficiently in game engines. Texture Atlas for DAZ Studio allows users to combine textures into a single texture atlas image and scale the image down to a size that can be easily incorporated into popular game engines.

Can I take 3D Universe models into other 3D applications and modify them further?

Yes, DAZ Studio supports a number of export options including .fbx, .obj and .daz (COLLADA).

Can I modify the models and use them in my game?

Yes. 3D Universe models can be modified and customized to fit the user's requirements. You would still require a Game Developer License for any 3D content used in your game.

Can I resell the modified versions of your models?

No. The 3D Universe End User License Agreement expressly prohibits the resale of 3D Universe models without the express written consent of 3D Universe.

Can I sell the models or pieces of the models as virtual goods within the game?

No. The 3D Universe End User License Agreement expressly prohibits the resale or redistribution of 3D Universe models without the express written consent of 3D Universe.

Commissions

Are you available for private jobs?

Yes, we do contract, or commissioned work. We charge a set hourly rate for any commissioned work, so the cost of the project will depend on the development time taken to finish the job. The license that our commissioned work is done under grants an exclusive full license to the client, so you may do anything you wish with the final products including selling it. The final product is not made available to anybody else, and is exclusively the property of the client. We do not require the client to give 3D Universe any credit. Because of this exclusive, full ownership license, the cost of a commissioned product is much more expensive than our store bought products that we sell hundreds of times over. If you are interested in a quotation, please feel free to contact us.

Typically we sell more than 200 copies of a store item before we even cover the development cost invested in the product. If you are interested in a quotation, please feel free to contact us.

Can I commission you to create morphs for other figures?

No, due to the complexity of 3rd party rights on other models, we will only create morphs on our own custom figures. As part of our commission agreement, the client gets full rights to the product we create, meaning that they can even resell if they wish. If the product that we created was a morph of some-one else's figure, the client would not have to same full rights.

Can I commission you to create a product that you then sell in your own store to reduce my costs?

No, we are very specific on the products that we create to sell in our store. Generally, a client won't understand the dynamics behind a product selling or failing. As part of our commission agreement, full redistribution rights are sold to the client, so you may sell the product yourself to cover costs if you wish. If you have an idea that you think we should create for our general store, you can always contact us.

Can I request that my commissioned item not be shown on your website?

Yes, the commissioned items shown on our website are only a portion of the commissioned jobs we've actually done. Clients who wish to maintain strict copyright control over their figures have the right to request that their products are not displayed publicly.

General Info

What software do you use?

We use several different packages to create our products. At this stage, we use ZBrush and Lightwave 10 to model our content, UV Layout for uv-mapping, Photoshop CS5 for texture creation and DAZ Studio 4.5 Professional for the rigging. We also, on occasion, use Maya and ZBrush for various items that require features that our everyday applications don't have. We use the sub-division method of modeling where the basic models are designed as low-resolution "cages". This method works very well for cartoon figures.

How long does it take to create a typical 3D Universe figure?

It does depend on the extras included with the specific figure. An animal figure typically takes about 40 hours of work, where a human figures can take up to 100 hours of work.

How do 3D Universe choose what products to create?

A lot of our choices are based on what we know will be popular. With our human figures, we find that generally female characters sell better than male characters. With our animal figures, we continually try to add to our existing animal selection. Most of our characters are designed to work well together, so there is always another figure, animal or set that can be added.

May I create 3d prints of your models?

In most cases - creating a 3d print of a model requires you to send a copy of the 3d geometry to a 3rd party. This is specifically not allowed, as it would count as redistribution which is against our End User License Agreement. If you have your own 3d printer, you can make a 3d print of any of our products providing it is for your own use only. It may not be distributed, given away, or sold. You can contact us to discuss options.

What is Genesis?

Genesis is a line of 3D figures designed to provide more versatility and customizability than any single 3D figure ever before. Genesis consists of a common base figure from which a huge range of other 3D figures can be derived. All Genesis figures utilize the same core rig and 3D mesh of the base Genesis figure that they are built from. The more add-on Genesis figure shapes that you have installed, the greater the range of possible characters you can create. With Genesis you can...

  • Quickly create custom characters and avatars
  • Blend different body shapes to form new characters
  • Use existing clothing on new Genesis shapes automatically
  • Design specific skin textures for your custom creation
  • Enjoy realistic bending across different figure proportions
The Genesis advantage is two-fold. First, all the various body shapes can be mixed and matched to create an endless combination of fresh and unique shapes. Second, this technology allows developers to create and support new figure shapes more quickly and efficiently, resulting in a larger supply of add-on content for end-users.(content from daz3d.com)

Can I copy part of the body mesh to create a clothing item that will fit perfectly?

No. Copying part (or all) of the geometry of any of our figures is not allowed as it would be classed as redistribution (even if changed by you). With some of our figures, we have made "developer packs" available which include basic body-suit geometries that are redistributable. If a "developer pack" doesn't exist for one of our characters, you can contact us and we'll see what we can work out.

What assurance do I have that a character I purchase will be supported in the future versions of the program I use?

Unfortunately, we have no control over what backwards support a developer will build into their software. Most companies will ensure that older content does still work in their latest software though. Our figures are made to work in the current versions of the products noted on the product page, we cannot guarantee that they will work in older versions of the software. However, if there are specific features that require a particular version of the software, we will make a note of it on the product's store page.

Can I convert one of your products to work in another application and sell that version?

No. Redistribution of our figures in any form is not allowed. You can contact us to discuss options.

Can I get a job at 3D Universe?

While we appreciate the interest in working with our company, we are not offering any positions on our staff at this stage. No CV's and/or Testimonials will be considered.
