General Products
What applications are your products made for?
Our products are made predominantly for Poser and DAZ Studio. DAZ Studio has the ability to export to FBX format which can be imported to most top 3d applications.
Where can I get Mimic lip sync files for your products?
We have created custom Mimic lip sync files (.dmc) for most of our older products. These files are all available at the following link:
Why are some of your products not Poser compatible?
Although the Poser application has been around for a long time, there are certain industry standard feature that are still not supported by it. Some of these feature include:
-
Geometry Sub-division -
Non-linear Scaling -
Dynamic joint positioning
How do I use your products?
Our products are created to work in Poser (made by Smith Micro) and DAZ Studio (made by DAZ 3D). These programs are 3D CGI rendering and animation software optimized for models that depict human/animal figures and sets or props in three-dimensional form. They are mostly used to pose and animate the figures in a similar way as a mannequin.
What are the Toon Generations?
The Toon Generations are a family of characters based on a morph-able toon human figure. The base has the ability to age from baby to elderly, and morph from male to female.
The Toon Generations 2 set of products is now also available which uses DAZ 3D's "Genesis 3" Male and Female figures as a base.
If I feature 3D universe products in my book illustrations, do I need to credit you?
Although it would be wonderful if you did credit us, you are not required to. Book illustrations fall under our standard usage license, and don't require any additional obligations from the client.
Do you accept product/freebie requests?
You are more than welcome to suggest items that you would like to see. There is, however, no guarantee that we will create the product.
I need support for using your products in Carrara/some other software.
Our products are made specifically for the software packages listed on the store page.
Can I redistribute your free downloads?
No, you cannot redistribute our free/commercial product in any form*. This includes:
-
Giving a copy to a friend -
Sharing the product through file sharing websites -
Making the product available for other to download through file torrent applications -
Converting the 3d format and giving away/selling the product on sites like Second Life, Turbosquid, etc
Game Developer
What is the Game Developer License?
With a game developer license, customers can license our content for use in 3D games. Normally our content is only available for 2D use in games (backdrops, sprites, videos, etc.).
When would I require a Game Developer License?
You would require a Game Developer License if you wish to include 3D content from one of our products in your game. This specifically refers to the 3D geometry or mesh.
Doesn't the 3D Universe Terms of Use prohibit the use of 3D Universe models in games?
3D Universe has introduced special licensing that is available for all 3D Universe custom content which includes distribution rights within projects like games and simulations.
I am using Prerendered 2D renders or "sprites" in my game - do I need a Game Developer Licence?
All of the content available at the 3D Universe Store is covered by the standard Terms of Use which allows 2D renders including sprites as well as rendered animations or movies.
If I have already purchased 3D Universe models under the standard license can I upgrade the license to a developer license?
No. You would need to purchase a new developer license.
Which developer license should I buy?
Developer licenses are available as Single-use and Multiple-use. If you are planning to use the model or content in only one project or game you can purchase the Single-use license. If you are planning to use the model in two or more projects purchase the Multiple-use license.
Can I upgrade my single-use license to a multiple-use license?
Yes. Please contact us regarding your license upgrade requirement.
Can I sell a game that uses your content?
Yes, as long as you have the correct game developer license for all 3D Universe content included in the game.
Do I have to pay royalties to use 3D Universe models in my games?
No. As long as you have purchased a Game Developer License for all 3D content included in your game, the Developer License Terms of Use grant a royalty-free license.
If my game that uses your products is free, do I still need a developer license?
Yes. You still need a Developer License for any 3D content or assets that will be included in the game. The standard Terms of Use do NOT grant those rights.
Are 3D Universe models not too high in polygons to be used in games?
Several tools are available to help reduce high polygon models. Available separately or in the Game Developer Kit, Decimator for DAZ Studio allows users to reduce the number of polygons in any given model or combination of models.
Aren't 3D Universe textures too big and high resolution to be used in games?
Some models contain too many textures or textures that are too large to be used efficiently in game engines. Texture Atlas for DAZ Studio allows users to combine textures into a single texture atlas image and scale the image down to a size that can be easily incorporated into popular game engines.
Can I take 3D Universe models into other 3D applications and modify them further?
Yes, DAZ Studio supports a number of export options including .fbx, .obj and .daz (COLLADA).
Can I modify the models and use them in my game?
Yes. 3D Universe models can be modified and customized to fit the user's requirements. You would still require a Game Developer License for any 3D content used in your game.
Can I resell the modified versions of your models?
No. The 3D Universe End User License Agreement expressly prohibits the resale of 3D Universe models without the express written consent of 3D Universe.
Can I sell the models or pieces of the models as virtual goods within the game?
No. The 3D Universe End User License Agreement expressly prohibits the resale or redistribution of 3D Universe models without the express written consent of 3D Universe.
Commissions
Are you available for private jobs?
Yes, we do contract, or commissioned work. We charge a set hourly rate for any commissioned work, so the cost of the project will depend on the development time taken to finish the job.
Why are your contract prices higher than your store prices?
The license that our commissioned work is done under grants an exclusive full license to the client, so you may do anything you wish with the final products including selling it. The final product is not made available to anybody else, and is exclusively the property of the client. We do not require the client to give 3D Universe any credit.</div><div><br></div><div>Because of this exclusive, full ownership license, the cost of a commissioned product is much more expensive than our store bought products that we sell hundreds of times over.
Can I commission you to create morphs for other figures?
No, due to the complexity of 3rd party rights on other models, we will only create morphs on our own custom figures.
Can I commission you to create a product that you then sell in your own store to reduce my costs?
No, we are very specific on the products that we create to sell in our store. Generally, a client won't understand the dynamics behind a product selling or failing.
Can I request that my commissioned item not be shown on your website?
Yes, the commissioned items shown on our website are only a portion of the commissioned jobs we've actually done.
General Info
What software do you use?
We use several different packages to create our products. At this stage, we use ZBrush and Lightwave 10 to model our content, UV Layout for uv-mapping, Photoshop CS5 for texture creation and DAZ Studio 4.5 Professional for the rigging.
How long does it take to create a typical 3D Universe figure?
It does depend on the extras included with the specific figure. An animal figure typically takes about 40 hours of work, where a human figures can take up to 100 hours of work.
How do 3D Universe choose what products to create?
A lot of our choices are based on what we know will be popular. With our human figures, we find that generally female characters sell better than male characters.
May I create 3d prints of your models?
In most cases - creating a 3d print of a model requires you to send a copy of the 3d geometry to a 3rd party. This is specifically not allowed, as it would count as redistribution which is against our End User License Agreement.
What is Genesis?
Genesis is a line of 3D figures designed to provide more versatility and customizability than any single 3D figure ever before. Genesis consists of a common base figure from which a huge range of other 3D figures can be derived. All Genesis figures utilize the same core rig and 3D mesh of the base Genesis figure that they are built from. The more add-on Genesis figure shapes that you have installed, the greater the range of possible characters you can create.
-
Quickly create custom characters and avatars -
Blend different body shapes to form new characters -
Use existing clothing on new Genesis shapes automatically -
Design specific skin textures for your custom creation -
Enjoy realistic bending across different figure proportions
Can I copy part of the body mesh to create a clothing item that will fit perfectly?
No. Copying part (or all) of the geometry of any of our figures is not allowed as it would be classed as redistribution (even if changed by you).
What assurance do I have that a character I purchase will be supported in the future versions of the program I use?
Unfortunately, we have no control over what backwards support a developer will build into their software. Most companies will ensure that older content does still work in their latest software though.
Can I convert one of your products to work in another application and sell that version?
No. Redistribution of our figures in any form is not allowed. You can contact us to discuss options.
Can I get a job at 3D Universe?
While we appreciate the interest in working with our company, we are not offering any positions on our staff at this stage. No CV's and/or Testimonials will be considered.
